A free open seminar at the Greek Centre in Melbourne took place on Thursday September 29.

The seminar titled The creation of modern Greece: Art, Mesologgi and Philhellenism in the 19th century was presented by lecturer Spiridoula Demetriou and focused on exploring “the subjective manner in which representations of Mesologgi reinforced supportive western beliefs about the Greek War of Independence and the intellectual creation of modern Greece,” Mrs. Demetriou stated on the community centre’s website.

The lecturer, Spiridoula Demetriou, examined how philhellene art has promoted Greek identity and culture and how it contributed to “Hellenism,” prior to 1830 when the new nation state was established.

A Ph. D. candidate in the Department of Art History at the University of Melbourne, Mrs. Demetriou also has a Bachelor’s in Economics and post-grad studies in Modern Greek language and literature.
