Daniel Day-Lewis in Athens: Ready to explore the world in a different wayDaniel Day-Lewis has visited Athens and expressed his admiration for the New Acropolis Museum along with his desire to contribute to the effort for the return of the Parthenon Marbles to Greece

"I just feel it's time to explore the world in a different way now," Daniel Day-Lewis said about his recent decision to retire from acting during a press conference in Athens. The actor made the statements in the Greek capital on Thursday, where he attended the premiere of what may be the last film of his career, Paul Thomas Anderson's historical drama "Phantom Thread", ANA reports.

Acclaimed as the World's Greatest Actor by "Time" in 2012 and the only actor in history to have won three Academy Awards for best male lead, Day-Lewis said he was "thankful" for his acting career and everything it had given him. When asked what prompted his decision to retire, he said he was unable to answer the question as he did not entirely know himself.

The premiere of "Phantom Thread" - which earned him another nomination for Best Actor - was held at the Stavros Niarchos Foundation (SNF) on Thursday, with the proceeds donated to a charity for the protection of individuals with cerebral palsy.
